Backups and Disaster Recovery

Back-ups and disaster recovery strategies are implemented directly on AWS, with redundancy scaled up or down to meet the client’s requirements. More specifically:

  • Load balancing (using Amazon ELB) works to migrate workloads off failed container (EC2) instances, while Auto Scaling groups automatically terminate “unhealthy” instances and launch new ones;
  • Amazon elastic IP addresses can be mapped to any EC2 instance in the same region, and in the event of failure can be used to shift network requests and traffic in under two minutes;
  • Additional redundancy can be provided by replicating container instances and databases across multiple AWS Availability Zones;In a Multi-AZ deployment, Amazon RDS automatically provisions and maintains a synchronous standby replica in a different Availability Zone;
  • The primary DB instance is synchronously replicated across Availability Zones to a standby replica to provide data redundancy, eliminate I/O freezes, and minimize latency spikes during system backups.
